The vibrant market town of Cirencester is the ideal base to tour the Cotswolds as well a great place to live and visit. Once Roman Corinium – the second most important town in the country in Roman Times - Cirencester’s Roman heritage is celebrated by the Corinium Museum with impressive mosaics, tombstones and sculptures on show over two floors. It also has room and shop reconstructions and objects from everyday Roman life.

 

The remains of an imposing Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century, said to be one of the largest and best preserved in Britain, is just a short walk from the town centre.

 

The town was once an important wool town and much of its wealth is as a result of the wool trade. The magnificent Cirencester Parish Church in the Market Place is one of the most impressive "wool" churches in the country.

 

The attractive Marketplace is also home to a lively Charter Market every Monday and Friday from 9.00 am - 3.00 pm. Products sold by the regular market traders include cheese, homemade pies, home cured ham and bacon, wet fish, fruit and vegetables, olives, gifts and  cards and much more.

On the second and fourth Saturday of the month, there is Farmers Market selling all manner of local produce on the second and fourth Saturdays mornings each month.

 

Today Cirencester is a lively market town boasting numerous interesting shops and galleries, pubs cafes and, restaurants. The town has comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation, relaxing hotels and self catering properties. There is also a caravan park at Cirencester Park.

 

Cirencester’s leisure centre is one of the best in the area with both wet and dry facilities, spread over two floors; it offers a varied programme of activities for people of all ages and abilities. There is also a privately owned health Club, Day Spa and Hotel in the Stratton area of the town.

 

For dog owners, there are wonderful walks in the abbey Grounds or in Cirencester Park, which is open to the public from 9am –5pm.

 

On the outskirts of Cirencester is the Cotswold Water Park. A haven for wildlife with 140 lakes, there are numerous activities and attractions available including water sports and fishing. There is a beach, cafe and playground at Keynes Country Park and there are a number of attractive holiday houses for sale or rent. The gateway Centre on the Spine Road, South Cerney is the main visitor focus and key information point for the Water Park.
